Detective Clarence G. "Bud" Backherms End of Watch 04/07/2019

The Fraternal Order of Police Florida State Lodge will be hosting the 41st Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service in Tallahassee, to recognize our fallen heroes.  PBSO Detective Clarence G. "Bud" Backherms will be added to the list of fallen heroes. Representatives from Lodge #50 will be assisting and participating in the event.  Lodge #50 will also be hosting the hotel accommodation for Detective Backherms's survivors.  

On February 28, 1990, Detective Backherms was shot in the abdomen when three suspects attempted to rob him while undercover. Detective Backherms was transported to the hospital, underwent surgery twice and was released from the hospital two months later, in April. The suspects were convicted of various offenses and given sentences ranging from 7-15 years in prison. Detective Backherms died on April 7, 2019 due to complications from the gunshot wound. Detective Backherms was the recipient of the department Combat Star award. 

The Memorial celebration takes place on April 23-24, 2023. On Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the Fraternal Order of Police along with the Concerns of Police Survivors will be hosting a reception and seminar for the officers' survivors in the Grand Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel, 101 South Adams Street, Tallahassee. Immediately after the reception, a barbecue dinner provided by the Fraternal Order of Police will be held in the Ponce DeLeon Park across the street from the Doubletree Hotel for all in attendance, beginning at 4:00 pm. An Evening of Remembrance service, featuring the roll call of heroes, will begin in the Capitol Courtyard at 6:00 pm.. 

On Monday, April 24th,  a Survivors’ breakfast buffet will be served between 6:30 and 8:00 am in the Grand Ballroom. The staging for the procession is at 8:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom and is scheduled to leave from the Doubletree at 9:15 a.m. The Memorial Service will begin at the Capitol in the courtyard at 10:00 am.
