Mr. Ron Cohen
President and CEO
SIG Sauer, Inc.
72 Pease Blvd
Newington, NH 03801

Dear Mr. Cohen,

I am writing to you on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to address a pressing concern regarding the reported safety issues with the SIG Sauer P320 firearm.

Recently, the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) identified incidents of premature discharges involving the SIG Sauer P320. During Basic Law Enforcement Academy firearms training, a student experienced a premature discharge with their agency-issued firearm. Upon further review, WSCJTC linked this event to a similar occurrence earlier this year. Out of concern for safety, WSCJTC has since prohibited the use of the P320 in its training facilities.

Additionally, the police department in Austin, Texas has removed the P320 from its approved weapons list, citing reports of malfunctions in the trigger system that may cause the weapon to discharge without the trigger being pulled. Such concerns about the reliability of these firearms strike at the heart of officer safety.

Confidence in their equipment is essential for law enforcement officers. These reports raise serious questions about the safety and reliability of the P320, which many of our members rely on to perform their daily duties. These concerns must be addressed promptly and transparently to protect officers and the communities they serve.

In order to provide my members with relevant information, I respectfully request the following:

  • An explanation of any known issues with the SIG Sauer P320, particularly those involving the trigger system or premature discharges.
  • Information on corrective measures that SIG Sauer has implemented or plans to implement, including upgrades, inspections, or recalls, to address these concerns.
  • Any guidance or resources that SIG Sauer can provide to ensure the safety of officers currently using the P320.

The officers who rely on your products must have absolute confidence in the safety and performance of their weapon. Your prompt response and cooperation will help us address these concerns and provide our members with the necessary information to make informed decisions regarding their equipment.

On behalf of the more than 377,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I trust in SIG Sauer’s dedication to supporting the law enforcement community and addressing these concerns with the urgency and transparency the situation requires.  Please contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office to provide the requested information or to discuss this issue further.  Thank you for your immediate attention to this critical matter.

Sincerely,

Patrick Yoes
National President
