The Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) has successfully passed both chambers of Congress and is now awaiting President Biden's signature to become law.
The House of Representatives approved the bill on November 12, 2024, with a 327-75 vote. The Senate followed by passing the bill on December 21, 2024, with a 76-20 vote.
This legislation repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which have reduced Social Security benefits for individuals receiving pensions from non-Social Security-covered employment, such as state or local government jobs.
The repeal is set to take effect for benefits payable after December 2023, providing financial relief to many public service workers, including educators, firefighters, police officers, and postal workers.
The bill's enactment marks a significant victory for these workers, ensuring they receive the full Social Security benefits they've earned.
This truly bipartisan victory is the result of years of hard work and unwavering commitment to Social Security fairness. We are proud to stand with our allies in this historic moment. This success wouldn’t have been possible without our members, who answered the call to action by reaching out to their Representatives and Senators. Your voices were heard!
